The Tape Test
The "Tape Test" (circumference-based body fat calculation) is the Army's secondary screening method. It is only required if a Soldier exceeds the weight limits in the Height/Weight screening table.
This calculator uses the official AR 600-9 formula to estimate percent body fat based on neck, waist, and hip measurements.
How to Measure
- Neck:Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple).
- Waist (M):Measure at the navel (belly button).
- Waist (F):Measure at the narrowest point of the abdomen.
- Hips (F):Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.
Max Allowable Body Fat (AR 600-9)
| Age Group | Male Max % | Female Max % |
|---|---|---|
| 17 - 20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21 - 27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28 - 39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40 & Older | 26% | 36% |
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I fail the tape test?
Soldiers who exceed the body fat standards are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). While on the program, you must demonstrate progress by losing 3-8 pounds or 1% body fat per month. Failure to make progress can result in separation from service.
Is there a new "One-Site" tape test?
Yes. As of June 2023, the Army authorized a new One-Site Tape Test (measuring only the waist at the navel).
The catch: If you pass the One-Site test, you are good. If you fail the One-Site test, you are not immediately flagged. Instead, you are required to take the traditional multi-site tape test (which this calculator uses). The result of this multi-site test is the one that counts for record.

Can I use a Bod Pod or DEXA scan instead?
Yes. Soldiers who fail the circumference-based tape test can request a secondary validation using Bod Pod, DEXA, or InBody 770 (where available) at an Army Wellness Center. If the supplemental method shows you are within the allowed body fat percentage, you will not be flagged.
